Crawley / Redhill

[ Cycle routes The Avenue Verte London <> Paris ] [ The South Country ]
  • 19.8 km
  • intermediaire Level Intermediate

You're in for a bit of a cultural shock along this stage, taking you down past Gatwick Airport. A cycle path runs right alongside the airport, leaving a memorable impression on those who use it. Neighbouring Crawley was built as an uncompromising New Town after the war. It's a lively place thanks to its proximity to Gatwick.

Be aware that this stage is complex, taking you through some further dense urban environments, so it requires your full attention. The route alternates between cycle paths and stretches on ordinary roads. Be careful crossing Redhill, as the route isn't uniformally well signposted through the town. Going from the outskirts of Redhill to Gatwick, the route takes you through countryside, following the railway line on its eastern side. At Gatwick, you can access both the airport's railway station and its terminals with ease from the cycle path. As to the track taking you alongside the airport itself, it's quite easy to use.

Alternative routes

Note that there is an alternative route you can take to reach Redhill from London, going via Greenwich, east along the Thames from the centre of the capital. For this route, you get onto the well-signposted NCN 21. You leave London via the Waterlink Way, crossing many parks and tranquil suburbs. The route is very pleasant, but there are several stretches that require a mountain bike, for example negotiating Warlingham and its golf course, or Caterham and its former quarries.
