After the New Town of Crawley, which has expanded greatly in recent decades, and having crossed the M 23 motorway, you reach a bucolic, wooded stretch following the Worth Way, which runs along the disused railway line that once linked Crawley to Tunbridge Wells.

Note that there are alternative routes you can opt for coming down via Redhill and Gatwick to Crawley; choose between NCN 20 or NCN 21, the latter the more direct route. When cycling through Crawley, pay close attention to the signage; it is continuous, but you have to keep your eyes peeled for it, as it is fairly minimal. Up until the M 23 motorway, you find yourself in a heavily urbanized zone. Things then change on the Worth Way greenway following the disused railway line to East Grinstead. This stretch is much more rural; the way has a hard surface, but the quality of the covering is mixed – make sure your bike has solid tyres.

Alternative routes

You can branch off here for Three Bridges railway station.

As already indicated, coming from Gatwick, the NCN 21 offers a more direct route to Crawley than the NCN 20.
