Newhaven / Polegate

[ Cycle routes The Avenue Verte London <> Paris ] [ The South Country ]
  • 26.9 km
  • intermediaire Level Intermediate

From Polegate you join the Cuckmere Valley, with its protected natural habitat and its pretty historic villages. You do need to go along ordinary roads however. You then arrive at Newhaven, which sits at the estuary of the River Ouse. Either side of the port, you can admire beautiful chalk cliffs that you'll find echoed across the Channel in Normandy.

This shortish stage isn't recommended for inexperienced cyclists, who can easily take a train from Polegate to Newhaven or take an alternative route going via Brighton, from where it's easy to get a train east along the coast. On leaving Polegate, you pass through a section of woods, on an unsurfaced track. Continuing from Polegate to Westdean, you have to go along quite busy roads in the main, but the villages you pass through are interesting. Along the section from Westdean to Seaford you travel along a cycle path running parallel to the A 259 road, but this path isn't complete for the moment and it includes a particularly tricky crossing at one point that is not suitable for family outings.

It would be a shame not to go and visit the seaside town of Eastbourne when it's so close to Polegate and has so much to offer. A well-signposted cycle track links Polegate and Eastbourne's seafront (at the Sovereign Centre).

  • Alternative and safer route from Polegate - Lulu

There’s a pleasant cross country and almost level 17 mile route to Hastings via Pevensy, which uses only minor roads with very little traffic. Fab art gallery on the beach, old fishing net drying huts. From there it’s easy to get a train to Newhaven.
